Fort Stanton Military Reservation was carved out of the Mescalero Apache homelands in 1855. By providing economic opportunities, social activities and defense for area residents, the Fort became the life support of the region for many decades. Rafael Chacon, Kit Carson, Mescalero Scouts and leaders like Cadette participated in the unfolding events of the disastrous Bosque Redondo relocation of Apaches and Navajos. The post also played a controversial peacekeeper's role during the violent days of the infamous Lincoln County War. A colorful cavalcade of rogues, ranchers and military leaders dominated the scene as competition for military contracts and political dominance escalated into war. Billy the Kid was incarcerated here and Governor Lew Wallace is said to have written part of his classic novel, Ben Hur w h i l e staying at the Fort. Fort Stanton is located between the towns of Capitan and Lincoln. Take Highway 380 to Route 220, and in about 2 miles, you see the Fort along the Rio Bonito. A museum is now open and volunteers from Fort Stanton Inc staff the operation. Call (505) 354-0341 for additional information and museum hours or click here. |
